Ask most people what blockchain is for and you will get one of two answers: cryptocurrency, or a vague shrug. Both are a bit unfair. Strip away the price charts and what is left is a fairly plain idea — a shared notebook that lots of strangers keep copies of, where every new line includes a fingerprint of the line before it. Change an old line and every copy after it stops matching.
That single property turns out to be useful for much sillier things than settling trillion-dollar markets. Here are some of the genuinely fun ones.
The vending machine that keeps its own receipts
Imagine a vending machine that publishes a public list of everything it has ever sold, updated the instant the coil turns. Nobody can quietly delete a row, not the operator, not the landlord, not the person who stocks the crisps. It sounds like overkill for a bag of chips, and it mostly is — but the same trick becomes genuinely interesting when the thing being tracked is a charity donation. Donors get to watch their money move from wallet to supplier to receipt, rather than taking an annual report's word for it.
This is the least glamorous corner of the entire industry, and arguably the one doing the most good: supply chains for coffee, cocoa and fish, where a farmer can prove provenance without hiring an auditor.
Nothing says forever like a hash
Couples have started writing their vows into public ledgers as a keepsake — a marriage certificate that no house fire, hard drive crash or messy divorce filing can erase. It carries no legal weight in most jurisdictions, which is precisely the charm. It is a love letter to nobody in particular, addressed to everyone.

Tickets that remember being resold
Concert tickets are a lovely antique: a scannable rectangle that a scalper can buy in bulk and mark up 400 per cent. Digital tickets issued as tokens can carry their own history, so a venue can cap resale prices, pay the artist a cut of every hand-off, or simply make a ticket non-transferable until 24 hours before doors open. Several festivals have trialled it, mostly to mixed reviews — the technology works fine; the queue outside the gate is still a queue.
Games that can't be switched off
This is where the fun gets slightly serious. When a game's world lives entirely on a public ledger, the studio that built it cannot shut the servers down, patch out a mechanic players loved, or delete your character in a terms-of-service update. Players keep playing because the world keeps existing.
The trade-off is that on-chain games are slow, expensive and stubbornly hard to build. Most are experiments. But a handful of small, strange, persistent worlds now exist that would be impossible to run on ordinary servers — where the rules really are the rules.
The honest caveat
Most of this is still a laboratory. Public ledgers are slow, fee structures are bewildering, and a great many "blockchain" projects are ordinary databases wearing a costume. Plenty of the fun experiments above will quietly fold.
That is fine. The interesting part was never the speculation — it is the small, stubborn, slightly ridiculous idea that a group of strangers who do not trust each other can still agree on a shared record. Whether that record holds a concert ticket, a wedding vow or the world's most expensive group chat, the trick is the same.
